She is Ex-Health Minister of Punjab and health has served as a Gynecologist in Moga, punjab since 1971. She is a renowned social worker, committed Congress worker, famous educationist and entrepreneur.
She is totally committed for upliftment of the weaker sections of the society. She has dedicated herself for value-based politics. She has been awarded with many prestigious awards for her contribution to the society.
She completed her MBBS from Dayanand Medical College, Ludhiana, in 1970. She had served as President of the Indian Medical Association Punjab State Branch for 3 years, and as Vice President of Central Indian Medical Association, New Delhi.

Interestingly, Dr. Shyam Lal Thapar was also a first cousin to the famous freedom fighter Shaheed Sukhdev Thapar, an associate of Bhagat Singh and Rajguru.
